Becoming Unbound™ with Dr. Nakiba Starr
The Unbound LetterA weekly letter for people doing the work
Friend,
This past week I caught myself waiting — waiting for answers, for clarity, for relief. I'd been working through some pain, and somewhere along the way I realized I'd quietly started believing that once it stopped, I could fully return to the goals I'd set for myself. To be honest and transparent — I want to lose weight. But the part behind that is I wake up most mornings with pain, and I just wanted to understand what was causing it so I could resolve it, make it go away, and "get back" to doing what I want. What I really want is to move freely — not to be limited. Not to think twice before I stand, walk, reach, or simply live in my body without negotiating with it first. This week, and writing this letter, has revealed so much to me. Going to the doctor didn't reveal the secret — it showed me what it wasn't. Ruling things out is also progress, even when it doesn't feel like resolution. I left without complete certainty, but not without clarity. And the thing I want to do, I still can. I'm just more intentional now.
"The doctor's visit didn't reveal
the secret. It showed me what it wasn't."
Looking Back
I've Been Here BeforeI watched one of my older Freedom Fridays from 2022, where I talked about having pain before and choosing to focus on other things I could — rather than the pain itself. And because I'd spent so much of this week wanting the pain removed, I found myself reflecting on Paul — who knew that feeling well. He carried a thorn in his flesh and pleaded three times for it to be taken away. It remained. What he was given instead was grace sufficient to continue. That's when this question came to mind: what if the pain is a reminder to redirect my attention instead of focusing solely on the pain? What is being revealed about me despite it?
"And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me... And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."
— 2 Corinthians 12:7,9, KJV It reminded me that Paul didn't wait until the thorn disappeared to continue walking in his purpose. And reading that passage made me wonder if I've been waiting for my own thorn to disappear before fully living again. What Is Still Possible?I Can Still Walk. Why Not Be Intentional?Seriously — I still have to walk. Why not be intentional about it? I can move my limbs. So I'm focused on building my body and strengthening myself, just like other things in life.
I am not defined by the things
that challenge me. I can allow myself to do the things and still move forward. That's the shift. Not waiting for the pain to leave before I live. Not giving it the leading role in a story that's still mine to write. The pain can be present without being in charge. My question changed this week. It used to be: When will this go away? Now it's: What is still possible today? Weight is just one of those things that's visibly tangible. The other changes are subtle, and honestly, that's frustrating sometimes — you can't see progress the same way. I do believe losing some weight will relieve some of what I'm carrying. But if I don't embrace the deeper changes beneath it, I'll only keep chasing the number instead of becoming the person.
This week's Freedom Friday wasn't a new lesson.
It was one I had to relearn. Becoming unbound was never just a phrase for me. It's the actual thing I want — to move freely, without limitation, without negotiating with my own body first. That's still the goal. I'm just walking toward it differently than I thought I would. This week's question — for you, and for me: What is still possible,
even with what you're carrying? Not despite it being resolved. Not after it disappears. Right now, as it is. You don't have to wait for the thorn to be removed to keep walking.
