Becoming Unbound™ with Dr. Nakiba Starr
The Unbound LetterA weekly letter for people doing the work
Friend,
This past week, my video about AI stalled. I had really spent time doing what I thought was "perfect." And I didn't get the response I wanted. I really was thinking about how much I seek external validation — and honestly, I can't say I know exactly what it stems from. I recognized a pattern in me that I'm working on releasing. This pattern is a lack of trust in myself. So many times before — when I made moves, or did things in life — I've always had others letting me know how they felt about it. And many times I've learned to second-guess myself for things I don't feel totally confident about. It often gets to the point where something in me needs to ask others for their thoughts and opinions before it feels real.
"I've recognized this pattern so deeply
where sometimes I've replaced other people's opinions with clarity."
The Sentence That Stopped Me
I've Confused Opinions With ClarityI've recognized that this pattern runs deep — sometimes I've replaced other people's opinions with clarity. And I've now recognized this as a form of fear. False evidence about reality. So I'm really working on examining my decisions. Focusing on what it actually means to truly trust myself and my decisions. It starts with allowing myself the space to grow, to try things out. It's okay to have doubt. It's okay to have none of the answers. But that trust — the trust I'm reaching for — comes from doing it anyway. Not always tied to a specific outcome. Sometimes it's really about the experience.
Trust within me comes from doing it anyway.
What I'm Practicing
One Thing, Without Asking PermissionThere have been plenty of times I did something without knowing the answers or the how. I just wanted something new — and with that, I had to do something different. So this week I'm focusing on just doing one thing without getting advice first. Not because advice is bad — it isn't. I've learned plenty from asking. But somewhere along the way, advice started getting perceived as permission. Don't be so tied to the exact outcome or the details. Just allow myself to experience it. This is the scripture I keep coming back to:
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." — Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV I think that's where I got it twisted. I wasn't wrong for wanting to trust something beyond just my own reasoning. I was just asking the wrong source to direct my path — other people's opinions, instead of the One who actually sees the whole way. This week's question — for you, and for me: Where am I looking for wisdom —
and where am I quietly asking someone else to authorize my life? Asking isn't the problem. Waiting for permission is. Trust isn't built by waiting until you're certain.
