A weekly letter for people doing the work
Issue 08 I Didn't Know What I Needed—So I Chose Myself Anyway
Friend,

This was one of those weeks where I felt like I had so much going on, and I don't really recall taking time for myself.

Maybe that's true, and maybe it's not. But I had a follow-up appointment I'd approved at the last minute, and when the day came, I asked myself: should I cancel it, or should I go? I realized my health should be nonnegotiable. So I kept it.

I also spent some time watching a new movie with my daughter. And as I settled back into my house after caring for everyone around me, I didn't understand what I needed.

"I realized my health
should be nonnegotiable.
So I kept it."

I Didn't Feel Like Logging. So I Didn't.

As I reflect, this week was busy — and I didn't feel like journaling. So I didn't. And I'm letting that be okay, instead of turning it into one more thing I failed at.

But I did do some things throughout the week to support my future self, even without writing them down as they happened.

Small Things for My Future Self

Kept the appointment instead of canceling it
Watched a new movie with my daughter
Did a hot oil treatment in my hair before washing it — something I hadn't done in a while
Washed, conditioned, and styled my hair
Went to service with a friend — spiritual food and companionship, together

None of it was dramatic. None of it fixed the busy week or answered the question of what I actually needed. But it was me, quietly choosing myself in the middle of caring for everyone else.

I didn't know what I needed.
So I did small things anyway.

There's a scripture I kept returning to this week:

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest."
— Matthew 11:28, KJV

I don't think rest always announces itself clearly. Sometimes it looks like hot oil in your hair. Sometimes it looks like a movie with your daughter. Sometimes it's just showing up to service and letting someone else carry the weight of the room for a while.

This week's question — for you, and for me:

What's one small thing you could do
for your future self this week?

It doesn't have to be big. It just has to be yours.

You don't have to know exactly what you need
to still choose yourself.
